Luxury Latin America is the #1 website for luxury travel in South America, Central America, and Mexico.

We offer candid and detailed reviews of the most luxurious hotels and resorts in Latin America, from Mexico down through the tip of Tierra del Fuego. We also feature articles based on the best trips in the region, tours, and adventure excursions that are a step above the standard fare experienced by most holiday tourists. And we cover vacation and retirement home luxury real estate developments in the Americas.

Huatulco, Oaxaca is one of the many planned tourist destinations designed by Mexico's National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism: Fonatur. Different from the likes of Cancun or Los Cabos (also developed by Fonatur), Huatulco's planning has taken a more ecologically friendly tack. The city has followed a low–density master plan and a focus on clean beaches that can be felt when you vacation there.

Back in 2011, Huatulco was the first destination in the world to get a Gold certification from tourism advisory group EarthCheck, a recognition that 100% of the region's energy comes from renewal sources. The award also recognized sustainability efforts such as wastewater treatment that keeps the bays pristine. This is also one of the few Mexican cities where you can drink the tap water without worry.

Valerie Verhalen of Resort Real Estate says that Huatulco attracts a different kind of investor as a result, one who wants to be close to nature and to live in a community that cares about its surroundings. You can hop on a boat and get to a beach with nobody on it or head into the mountains for hiking, adventure activities, or visiting a coffee farm.
